new G55 AMG caught testing

It seems that Mercedes isn’t very happy with us Indian’s comparing the present G55 AMG with the Tata Spacio, because what you are currently looking at is the new one! Mercedes has finally started working on the successor of its GL-Class based sports SUV, and luckily our friends from Spyshots.NL have snapped one of its test-mules. Being over five metres long, nearly two metres wide and almost two metres tall, the new GL55 is so big, it even dwarfs the Audi Q7.

The test-mule carried a hell lot of camouflaging, and hence getting into the visual details would be tough. However, it is easy to make out that it’s a GL-Class carrying a wide-body kit and the trade-mark AMG wheels. Talking about the mechanicals, the cars suspension has been lowered for obvious reasons and under-the-hood, you’ll now find a 5.5 liter AMG tuned bi-turbo V8 motor. It is the same engine that does duty on the current car, and produces a whopping 507 horses! AMG may further tune this motor for better performance figures, but for now we presume this is what the new G55 will come with.

On the inside too, the car may carry the interiors of the GL Class, but since it’s the AMG variant expect an extra bit of chrome and leather. On-a-whole, it’ll be hard to give you any more information on the G55 as it is in its initial phase of testing. With so many auto-shows coming up this year, we wouldn’t be surprised if Mercedes slips in a surprise launch for us. However, we’ll have to wait for a green-flag from Mercedes, before we presume any further.

Good things don’t come cheap, and in the G55’s case this statement is more than true. The current car itself costs more than Rs. 1.2 crore and hence our expectations from its successor aren’t any less. With the lack of any sports SUV’s in our country, we don’t have much to compare it with. But we can soon expect a few of its rivals to step up in this segment, keeping in mind their availability in the international market.
