Thanks to our friends at IndianAutosblog who have snapped the Rextron SUV being tested in India close to Nashik. Ssangyong will start assembling sport-utility vehicles in India late this year to avoid high import tariffs imposed on completely built units.
SsangYong plans to assemble the Rexton SUV with a 2.7-liter diesel engine starting from the second half and in 2013, the Korando C SUV with a 2.0-liter diesel. They will be built at the Mahindra ‘s Chakan plant near the city of Pune and the CKDs will be shipped from SsangYong’s Pyeongtaek, South Korea plant.
The Rextron SUV has been updated in 2010 with a new frontal collision warning and prevention system along with changes to engine and exhaust to curb emissions.
The SsangYong Rextron will be priced close to the 20 lakh mark which makes the SUV compete with the likes of Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour and Chevrolet Captiva.
Mahindra has tested success with the XUV500 and hopes the SsangYong range will further help the SUV maker to establish the company in International markets. The acquisition has been successful for the company and has already started making profits.
With the Rextron Ssangyong will start its journey in the Indian market.
