Finally the big day had come and 28 September saw the launch of the all new XUV500 in India. The XUV a global product form the Mahindra stable will define an all new look and quality for the company who has been making jeeps and SUV’s for the last 60 years in India.
The XUV500 has a tough and solid build, promises plenty of space on the inside and is very well equipped with loads of features. The list includes LED reading lights, ESP, tyre-pressure monitoring, six airbags, traction control, ESP and hill-descent control, cruise control, steering mounted controls and many more.
Mahindra will launch the XUV500 in South Africa on September 30, followed by launches in Australia, South America, Western Europe and SAARC.
Available in three trim versions, the XUV500 2WD W6 is priced at Rs 10.8 lakh, 2WD W8 costs Rs 11.95 lakh, while the top-of-the-line 4WD W8 variant retails at Rs 12.88 lakh. The company will begin bookings from Saturday and deliveries are expected in a couple of weeks time.
This is indeed a killer price which will surely set the sales chart on fire. Seems like the Scorpio will be pushed down the ladder to make more room for the XUV500. In the domestic market, it will be first available in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai and Pune. It will be pitched against the likes of General Motors’ Captiva and the Toyota Fortuner, which are priced at around Rs 19-20 lakh.
Mahindra will manufacture the new SUV at its Chakan plant near Pune and was designed entirely at Mahindra’s R&D centre in Chennai.
The XUV500 is powered by a 2.2-litre M-Hawk engine with a transverse layout. This engine develops 140bhp ans 330Nm of torque. Mated to this engine is another first for an all Indian vehicle – a six-speed manual gearbox, developed in-house by Mahindra. The car has disc brakes abound on all four wheels and in addition there is ABS, EBD plus ESP to ensure safety. There are driver and front passenger air bags, start/stop is standard equipment and there is also hill descent control for the top line offering.
